Wilton Reads is focusing on Ann Patchett's latest book, State of Wonder.
The activities culminate in an author visit on May 30 at Wilton Library.
You can sign up for that now - if interested. See link above.
I considered switching our books around to accomodate reading this book - but let's not complicate matters!
I registered for May 30. Hope you guys will join me!

OK - based on the fact that hardly anyone is getting anywhere with the book - I think we should get together and talk a little about the book - but also see a movie.
So - Ellen is having issues with hosting on Monday night. I suggest we see a movie together at Bethel Cinema.
I'll put out info on possibilities shortly.

Catching up: City of Thieves
I finally finished the book last week. It was a great read. I liked it a lot and will recommend it to others. Thanks to whoever put that on our list. It was a book I never would have picked up myself.

I am close to finishing the audio version of Brave New World read beautifully by Michael York. I had brought it up as a book club selection but no one was too interested. I have to tell you that I highly recommend reading/listening to this book. It is a fascinating perspective on futuristic utopia and, really, a "negative utopia" as Huxley referred to it.

Finally!
So, I have finally finished The House of the Spirits. Boy, it was long... And the end was slow reading. Having relatives from South America and hearing some of their stories made it easier for me to picture what people went through during those revolutionary times. Can't say I loved the book (I thought it was too long) but glad that I stuck with it and read the whole thing.
Now - on to City of Thieves...

Update:
Great meeting at Janet H's. Thanks for hosting and thanks for the great treats!
Having an iPad on hand to look stuff up during the meeting and to read from websites instead of printing has been great (an iPhone or a laptop would do the same thing). Janet's TV in the den is set up for internet too - so we were able to watch a couple of YouTube vids of Benioff interviews. These devices are adding a new dimension to our meetings.
Next up - Hemingway's Boat at Ellen's on Mar 26.

Meeting Synopsis/Books Selected through Aug 2012
We had a very different sort of meeting last night. For starters - there were only 6 of us. And - only Sheila had finished the book!!! But we still managed to have a great discussion about the book because the themes were present throughout the book and we had all read enough to understand and discuss. All of us intend to finish the book as we are all enjoying reading it. We used an iPad to enhance our meeting last night. We actually had a couple of iPads and a couple of iPhones there......Anyway - re the discussion - Janet I had located sites to use for discussion and rather than printing stuff out we went green and used the iPad to access the sites. We also used the iPad to research book ideas for upcoming books. And we selected books through the end of August! I even updated the blog a bit during the meeting - using the iPad - excuse the typos! Not as good with that iPad keypad....

97 Orchard : an edible history of five immigrant families in one New York tenement
I've mentioned this one in the past - doesn't it sound interesting? It's a look at immigrant life through five families and ties in culinary stuff, too. Just a thought.
